Defensible Space

Summary of California regulations

1.  Zone 1 (the area closest to the house):  Keep it free of all vegetation and combustible material, eg pine needles; stored combustibles

2. 100 ft zone:

  • remove pine needles and pine cones  (This is an ongoing task throughout the summer)
  • prune shrubs so that it’s easy to get a rake under the branches of the shrub
  • Spacing between shrubs = 2X the height of the shrub on flat slope.  Example: 6 ft spacing between 3 foot high shrubs. On slopes greater thatn 20%, spacing is 4X the height of the shrub
  • Cut lower limbs of trees above shrubs. Spacing between top of shrub and tree limbs should be 3X the height of the shrub

Where to Dispose Greenwaste

1.  Free dumpster at Dollar Point Beach on Memorial Day Weekend and other dumpster weekends, to be announced.

2. Free greenwaste drop off at Tahoe Truckee Sierra landfill, 900 Cabin Creek Rd. off Hwy 89 near Truckee

3. Rent a 6 yard dumpster from Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal, (about $190 for a week) 530-583-7800
